"God showed me something small, no bigger than a hazelnut, lying in the palm of my hand… and it was round as a ball. I looked at it with the eye of my understanding and thought: 'What can this be?' And it was generally answered thus: 'It is all that was made.' It was so small I thought it might disappear, but I was answered... everything has being through the love of God." --Julian of Norwich

Looking back...

Yesterday, while I was puttering around in the kitchen all day cooking curries, baking roti and currant roll and listening to Johnny Cash sing hymns, I started thinking back to who I was five years ago, and I was amazed at some of the differences.  This reminds me of those lists we all used to make on Facebook of 25 random things about yourself, but here are a few lists to mark all the changes:

Ten things I am now (but wasn't 5 years ago)

1)  A wife
2)  A Master of Arts
3)  A Master of Christian Studies
4)  An aunt (x3!)
5)  A mother
6)  A teaching assistant
7)  A resident of Vancouver, BC
8)  A home chef
9)  A member of St. John's Anglican Church, Richmond, BC
10)  A locavore and Community Supported Agriculture subscriber

Five things I was then (but am not now)

1)  An inner-city teacher
2)  A student
3)  A resident of NYC
4)  The resident of a fifth-floor walk up apartment
5)  A commuter (one hour there, one hour back, five days a week; sure don't miss that!)

Five things that I was then, am now, and probably always will be

1)  A reader
2)  A writer
3)  An optimist
4)  A Christian feminist
5)  A city-dweller

  1. Goodness, you list sounds a lot like mine! Well, except that I'm not an aunt (my husband and I are both oldest children), and a few other little things. But yeah: five years ago I was commuting an hour each way to university, eating hot pockets and cheese strings, and thinking that mothering sounded like a dull and sad vocation. Goodness, how things change! And I'm glad for all of them.

    1. Funny enough, my husband and I are also oldest children, but perhaps older than you. That and the youngest in my family got started early. :) Actually, I'm an aunt x3, I forgot one on the other side... oops! It just keeps changing at this stage in the game.

And you're right, the changes are great. I have a little daily calendar above the kitchen sink that I haven't turned the page on since November because it says: "It is in changing that things find purpose. -Heraclitus" I need this reminder every day. :)
